why won’t flash lite 3 connect to the internet!!??

because! obviously you need to change the local playback security to “network only” silly!

the reason for this is because the default setting is “local only,” which is the default publish setting in flash 8. while i can appreciate adobe trying to prevent people from hacking my phone and running up a phone bill, it would be helpful to have known this when building my app instead of taking a month and a half to track down the fix from a third party who i happened to meet on several drunken occasions at flash on the beach.

Nick Gerig, where ever you are, may santa be kind to you and your family, and give your children a bit of snow over the holidays, and thanks to Niqui for the insight to make that connection!

a moment with snorre…

my good friend snorre and i were just having an im conversation, when this lil blurb happened…

[10:29] me> I gave up on trying to convince people I am clever, and became a drunk instead
[10:30] snorre> what else was there to do for you in norway?
[10:30] snorre> it was your destiny

this explains so much… :)

Flash on the Beach Reflections

wow wow wow

it has taken a couple days to recover and ponder the events of the last few days. the summary though is this:

what a conference!

the highlights from this year (in no particular order and missing all sorts of great people) include:

  • hanging out with the usual krew and admiring matt’s determination to keep up with michelle, despite not being used to our liver-defying lifestyle

  • hearing some incredibly inspirational sessions from the likes of Natzke and Tarbell

  • learning a ton about as3 and flex from Branden Hall and Tink

  • fantastic dinner/hob-knobbing/networking sessions with adobe and ms people

  • ‘acquiring’ keith peter’s game framework

  • chumbys from Niqui and Keith!

  • having a champagne buying competition with Hoss that led to…

  • a well-documented swim in the english channel at 4am

to be honest, i don’t know how John Davey does it. if you have missed the last two fotb’s, then you really need to get your act together for next year. i am already planning to be there again, hopefully with something to show from a project one of the people listed above and i are setting up…

so i was telling ollie what happened last year at fotb…

can’t wait to get back to brighton bay-bee!

autumn music

the other day i was speaking with my good friend håvard about the arrival of fall, and how it is my absolute favorite season. hailing from new england, there is nothing like fresh apple crisp after taking a walk down a wooded road in the white mountains. ahhhhh. anyway, as the discussion progressed, i stated that i can start to pull out my autumn music. i am one of those people who has certain music that can only be listened to during certain seasons. as such, i offer up this selection of music i believe to be the best match with that batch of fresh apple crisp. enjoy!

Elfin Knight, Kate Rusby in reality, anything by kate makes for perfect autumn music, but this is a particularly lovely track

Anna Begins, Counting Crows counting crows’ “August and Everything After” has always been a classic autumn album

My New Vow, Jennifer Kimball a sparse track using only a strumstick, a heavy song about endings.

Art Isn’t Real, Deer Tick hailing from rhode island, a fantastic late summer romp down back country roads

She Goes On, Crowded House i still remember raking leaves in the backyard the fall i discovered this album. a great track and a great memory

Safe Travels, Peter and the Wolf a new entry, it just has that vibe i like i early/mid fall

this isn’t a comprehensive listing, but at least it’s a few tracks to listen to…

fotb mofo!

That’s right kids, its time to start planning your trip to Flash On The Beach, only the greatest Flash conference out there. I spoke last year, which was great and all, but a bit stressful. This year I get to go as an attendee and heckle Keith Peters from the back row… :-D

Let me know if you are going, and maybe we can meet up for a pint around the corner from the Old Ship. Ol’ Peculiar here I come!!!!

this has to be a joke…

now that i am a dad, i find things like this to be so very insulting:

http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article1924493.ece

because, as everyone knows, serious matters like child custody and reproductive rights are best resolved at the pub. not to mention the minister of children and equality has her theorhetical knowledge from, oh, uh, high school:

http://www.regjeringen.no/nb/dep/bld/dep/minister.html?id=62 (scroll to the bottom, videregående skole is a mishmash between vocational school and high school, and her focus was marketing!)

i just hope the next women’s rights meeting happens at the hair salon or mall. No wait, the lingerie shop!!!

thought for the day

I just saw the film Coach Carter yesterday, and there was a great quote, albeit cheesy and overly sentimental. Nonetheless, the idea is still powerful, and one that relates to doing anything great in life:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It’s not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

anyway, take it for what it is worth…

falling off the radar

i am going to take advantage of the norwegian social welfare system and take six weeks off with my son and grrl. while i will be checking email and whatnot, don’t expect any sort of quick replies until i am back online in august.

Bitmap Filters vs. MouseEvent

So, I have started running into issues with ROLL_OVER/ROLL_OUT events firing in an alternating, rapid succession. After hours and hours of reviewing my code and the placement of various assets, I decided to toggle off the bitmap filters. Lo and behold, by shutting off the filter, the events fired correctly. However, to make matters worse, I can get the filters to work in some instances with the mouse events, but not in others. Gah…

Long story short: don’t use bitmap filters on buttony things unless someone can come up with an answer in the comments here…
